The Journal of Adventist Education® is the professional publication for Seventh-day Adventist® teachers and educational administrators worldwide. Articles submitted for publication should address topics of interest to that group.

The Journal is published quarterly, with approximately eight articles appearing in each issue. Articles by freelance authors are welcome. The following aspects may be of particular interest to prospective authors:

Focus and Audience

Articles may deal with educational theory or practice, although the Journal seeks to emphasize the practical. Articles dealing with the creative and effective use of methods to enhance teaching skills or learning in the classroom are especially welcome. Such essays should demonstrate the skillful integration of Seventh-day Adventist faith/values and learning, whether theoretical or practical.

Periodically, issues will deal extensively with a single topic or issue. Articles representing various approaches or the in-depth discussion of aspects of the issue will be welcome.

The target audience of an article may be teachers: elementary, secondary, or college/university level; or educational administrators. The Journal's constituency is international, a fact writers should keep in mind as they explore the implications or applications of a given topic. Special attention, where applicable, should be given to the concerns of under-resourced student populations and students with special needs. Writers should define their target group precisely and address its concerns in a specific manner.

Preferred Topics

  • A call for action on some problem (drug use, need for physical activity, lack of computer access, minority graduation rates, violence, sexual harassment, teacher burnout and morale, hazards at school); with suggestions about how to solve it
  • Addressing the needs of students with special needs, learning disabilities, physical handicaps
  • New methods and approaches; applying educational research in the classroom
  • Church projects related to education
  • Classroom climate, interpersonal skills, counseling, discipline
  • New methods and approaches, such as cooperative learning, multiple intelligences, individualized instruction, thematic instruction, etc.
  • Educational administration
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Ideas for professional enrichment, staff development, teacher training
  • Ideas for worship, religious activities
  • Inspirational articles related to the task of the teacher, goals of Adventist® education

Submission Procedures

Articles by freelance authors are welcome. Please contact the Editor before submitting a finished manuscript to ensure that the topic is usable and that the Journal has not printed anything recently on the same subject.

If the article has already been printed elsewhere, please include information regarding the publisher, source, and issue date.

Manuscripts must be submitted to the Journal through Editorial Manager: The Journal utilizes a double-blind peer review process, so all personal identification should be removed from the manuscript. Details such as your name, employer, and current position will now be collected through the Editorial Manager system as part of the author registration process.

Due to space limitations, accepted articles may not be published immediately. The editorial staff reserves the right to edit all manuscripts as necessary.

Guidelines for Submitting Manuscripts

  • Articles should be six to eight pages long (2500-3000 words), with a maximum of 10 pages in length, including references/endnotes; manuscripts for the “Best Practices at Work” column should be 3-6 pages (1500-2000 words).
  • Two-part articles will be considered.
  • Material should be double-spaced, using 12-point type, a 70-character line (one-inch margins at top and bottom and right and left), and standard paragraph indention.
  • Subheads should be inserted at appropriate intervals.
  • All articles must be submitted in electronic format.
  • Please submit articles in MS Word (.doc, .docx) format. If you cannot do so, send in Rich Text Format (.rtf). Do not submit articles as .pdf files.
  • Submit graphs, charts, and other graphics in one of the following formats: .pdf, .pps, .eps, .jpg, .tiff.
  • Quotations should be indicated. Please follow the Chicago Manual of Style instructions for the bibliography and endnotes. Endnotes, in numerical order, should include complete bibliographic information: full name of the author, title of work, volume and number if applicable, city of publication, publisher, year of publication (include month[s] if a periodical), and page number(s).
  • Please enclose photocopied pages to verify facts and quotations. The information to be photocopied is as follows: the page(s) on which the fact or quotation occurs, the title page of the book or journal, and copyright information. For electronic references, include the date when the Website was accessed.
  • Authors should obtain permission to reprint charts, graphs, and photos (see "Guidelines for Submitting Photographs" below).

Guidelines for Submitting Photographs

  • Photos on all subjects relating to education are welcome. Do not send a large number of photos as e-mail attachments to a single message (the combined size of all attachments to one e-mail should be no more than about 8 megabytes). If you are sending many photos, store them on a CD-ROM and mail them to the Editor’s office. Include your name as part of the photo file name and your contact information (name, address, e-mail).
  • To ensure high-quality photos, use the highest setting on your digital camera or smartphone.
  • Submit graphs, charts, and other graphics in one of the following formats: .pdf, .pps, .eps, .jpg, .tiff.
  • All photos must be in the following formats: .jpg or .tiff.
  • Send only high-resolution photos. To reproduce well, photo files should be at least 500 kilobytes, preferably 1-5 megabytes (or larger).
  • Glossy prints are acceptable; also, please indicate if you wish for them to be returned.
  • If you are using a photo-editing program or e-mail program that asks you to select the resolution/size of photos to send, choose “Large,” “Original size,” or “High resolution.”
  • Do not send photos copied/downloaded from the Internet. They usually have too low a resolution to print well and may have copyright restrictions.
  • Before sending any photo, ensure that you are either the owner or have permission from the owner/copyright holder to submit it for publication in the Journal.
  • Do not embed photos in Word files or e-mails. Send as attached files.
  • Bio photos: Please provide a formal photo, wearing professional work or church clothes, with a plain background and only one person in the photo.
  • If you submit photos with people in them, contact the Editor for a model release form. All people in every photo must sign this release; a parental signature is required for minors.

Peer Review

Most articles printed in the Journal are peer-reviewed.

A double-blind process is used for peer review; the editorial staff shields the author’s identity from the peer reviewers, and authors are not told who reviewed their article.

The reviewers evaluate the article on a scale of 1 to 5 (with 5 being the highest score) in the following areas:

  • Relevance to Seventh-day Adventist teachers and educational administrators worldwide
  • Use of research, source materials
  • Subject covered adequately and from a defensible viewpoint
  • Author’s conclusions/recommendations (if any) are appropriate and adequate
  • Overall quality of manuscript (writing, clarity, logic, organization)

Then the reviewers are asked to choose from the following options for Overall Recommendations:

  1. Outstanding manuscript, accept
  2. Accept with minor revisions;
  3. Accept with major revisions (please specify)
  4. Inappropriate topic, refer to another journal

  5. Reject.

The reviewers are encouraged to make specific recommendations for revision and are allowed to insert comments and suggestions into the manuscript. They are also asked to suggest illustrations, charts, or other supporting features that would make the article more accessible to readers.

When the Editor has received the peer reviews, the evaluations are combined into one master form. After review by the Editor and the Journal’s departmental advisor, they are shared with the author, along with any comments the reviewers have inserted into the manuscript and the Editor’s recommendations for revising the article.

In cases where the article is part of a theme issue, the coordinator for the issue also reviews the manuscript and makes recommendations regarding revisions.

The author is given time to complete the revisions and resubmit the article.


The Journal of Adventist Education® retains First North American Rights for each article it publishes unless other arrangements are made. Upon publication, authors receive an honorarium, a PDF of the individual article, and a PDF of the whole issue. In addition, authors will receive a link to the web-based HTML version of the article, along with the recommended citation.   

Articles will be posted on the Journal’s website in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.
